World No Tobacco Day 2026: Theme and Objectives
World No Tobacco Day is commemorated annually on 31st May to highlight the dangers of tobacco consumption and promote efforts to reduce tobacco and nicotine dependency worldwide. The theme for 2026 is "Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction." This campaign sheds light on the tactics used by tobacco and nicotine companies to redesign and market their products to lure new users, particularly children and teenagers, while circumventing tobacco control laws. It also focuses on raising public understanding of nicotine addiction and advocating for more stringent tobacco control policies.
Originating from the World Health Organization's member states, the day was first proposed in 1987 through Resolution WHA40.38 as a "World No-Smoking Day" to be held on April 7, 1988. Subsequently, in 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 officially designated 31st May as World No Tobacco Day every year. The day serves as a global platform to encourage quitting tobacco, fortify health regulations, and safeguard future generations from tobacco-related harm.
